Workload-Informed Staffing in Special Education: Understanding the State Landscape and Policy Approaches: Session 1

PROGRESS Center expert Allison Gilmour will join AIR Senior Researcher Brittany Sterrett for a Northeast Comprehensive Center webinar exploring workload-informed approaches to special education staffing.

Persistent shortages of qualified special education teachers can make it difficult for schools to provide the services and supports students with disabilities need to succeed. This webinar connects closely to the PROGRESS Center’s work to strengthen educational programming for students with disabilities by exploring how states and districts can better align staffing decisions with educators’ responsibilities and workloads.

Designed for state and district education leaders, the webinar will:

  • Introduce a workload-informed approach to special education staffing,
  • Examine current state policy trends, and
  • Share strategies for integrating workload considerations into staffing models to better support educators and students.

Date: Wednesday, November 18

Time: 3–4 p.m. ET

Workload-Informed Staffing in Special Education: Defining Responsibilities and Aligning Resources for Success: Session 2

PROGRESS Center expert Allison Gilmour returns for the second webinar in the Northeast Comprehensive Center’s series on workload-informed staffing in special education.

This session will take a closer look at special education teachers’ working conditions and how workload-informed staffing can help create the conditions educators need to effectively support students with disabilities. The topic complements the PROGRESS Center’s focus on strengthening the systems, practices, and supports that help educators deliver high-quality educational programming for students with disabilities.

Designed for state and district education leaders, the webinar will:

  • Feature information from Dr. Elizabeth Bettini about research on special education teachers’ working conditions, including their responsibilities and the supports that enable teachers to be effective in their roles; and
  • Educate participants about how improving working conditions can promote teacher retention and strengthen services and supports for students with disabilities.

Date: Wednesday, December 16
